Tilt Tuesday #9 Self-Reflection, Character Strengths, and Generativity

Insights from the Tilt 365 Science Team

Many medical conditions do not necessarily present with self-observable symptoms, and sometimes the same can be true of our interactions with others.  Unless others explicitly tell us that certain behaviors trigger them, we might be forever unaware of our impact.

This blog will discuss the importance of self-reflection, grounded in character strengths, and how this type of self-reflection can help you to increasingly embody generativity.

In the absence of feedback, self-reflection can help us identify behaviors or habits that we engage in that can be unpleasant to others.  Once we have identified any such behaviors, we can work to eliminate them in the interest of the greater good.  When this occurs, we are pursuing a generative mindset.

Self-reflection can be accelerated by focusing on character strengths and identifying whether or not we are using a given character strength in a balanced manner.

For example, confidence is good, but others might be provoked if we come across as arrogant or dismissive (overuses of confidence).  Similarly, diligence is admirable, but if we obsess over every tiny detail or are inordinately rigid about routines, coworkers probably won’t want to collaborate with us on projects.

Character strengths–12 in total–are the anchors of the Tilt Framework and are also what the Tilt 365 assessments measure (in varying formats).  Pursuing generativity can begin with taking any of these assessments and enacting the character strengths insights featured in the reports they generate as we continue with our developmental journeys.
