Introduction

The Tilt system is a character-strengths-based theory for the development of positive self-concept which, in turn, generates positive influence with others. The system measures both self-perceived character strengths and feedback from others about how those character strengths (or lack thereof) show up in relationships with others. The system measures four specific categories of character strengths that make up whole-person identity. When these character strengths are developed in a balanced way, they create a balanced sense of self that can solve problems with whole-brain thinking. When out of balance (due to a perceived set of unmet needs) the self-concept can become distorted and biased toward getting those needs met by others. What results is a distorted sense of self that is not experienced as "whole" and therefore seeks to become whole through getting needs met by others. This creates a self-defeating, insatiable quest to get self-esteem from others. For example, if I do not accept myself, then I may seek to get acceptance from others in a way that is excessive and comes across as needy. This creates drama, confusion, stress and chaos in relationships. On the other hand, if one develops a strong sense of self that includes ALL FOUR sets of character strengths that keep the identity in balance, then relationship happen with balance and flow.

Character & Character Strengths

Character: The definition of Character is "the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual" or stated another way it's the "strength and originality of a person's nature". In essence, its how you are experienced by others and relates to that experience being either negative or positive by the observer. This is what the Tilt 365 web app measures. It is a mirror back to you regarding how you are being experienced by others. Right or wrong, their views may matter to you especially if you have been careful to invite observers who matter to your life and career.

Character Strengths: The definition of character strengths is "the quality or state of being strong" or a more specific definition is "the emotional or mental qualities necessary for dealing with situations or events that are distressing or difficult". (Note: This is distinct from physical strengths which are included in the category of "abilities" when describing human behavior).

Development of Character Strengths: The development of character strengths is therefore related to the development, natural or intentional, of emotional and mental capacities that help us to cope with and deal effectively with stress, difficulty and life challenges. Distinct from personality traits, character traits and character strengths are developed to help us operate from a well-rounded sense of strength when challenges come our way. When developed (actualized) to a high level, character strengths (and the resulting strong self-concept) helps us to operate with grace, even under the worst of circumstances. In the Tilt 365 system, there are four kinds of emotional or mental strengths that come together to create a solid and grounded sense of self that is balanced, conscious, creative and inspired. They are contained in the four quadrants of the Tilt System, as follows:
