Avoiding the Wake-up Call.

Subliminal messages.

Our minds and bodies are delivering subliminal messages to us all the time. Unfortunately, these messages often escape our detection because we are too busy focusing on the distractions and stress that make up our daily lives. We work too many hours, maintain unhealthy diets and rarely get enough sleep or exercise, as a result, we fall out of balance. Not until these messages become louder and more insistent do we begin to pay attention. Making changes is hard, we wish we could just ignore the messages and go back to the way things used to be but without balance eventually, we will find ourselves tipping too far in one direction or another. This often leads to an unhealthy or unfulfilled existence.

The wake-up call

The mind and body are persistent. We can ignore them for a time but if we do not act, they will become increasingly more insistent. Ignore a problem for too long, we usually wind up in crisis mode. Sometimes it takes a crisis to wake us up, but the problem with waiting for a crisis is that they tend to be very unpleasant. Unfortunately, unless we can find a way to change our behavior the outcome is more or less inevitable. We face a problem and begin to tip in one direction the longer we wait, the more we tip until the message is no longer subliminal and the mind and body are shouting, “Hey, somethings wrong here, pay attention!” This is what’s commonly referred to as the wake-up call. The bad part about the wake-up call is the severity of the situation, the good part, if there is one, is that now we can finally stop running. Which means we have an opportunity to make lasting change and reestablish balance but do we really have to reach a crisis point to achieve balance? What if there a way to avoid such a catastrophic set of options? Turns out there is.

What does balance look like?

What if we began to look at balance in a more proactive, less reactive light? What if we could cut out all the drama and face the issues we need to face before they became catastrophic? What might our lives look like if we could address and correct our balance at an earlier, healthier point in the process? This is called awareness. Finding awareness is the key to maintaining balance. To find awareness, we must first understand ourselves. What stories do we tell ourselves? What do we struggle with and what motivates us? How do we react under stress? What were we taught and what did we learn through observation about our reactions and how they played out in our formative years? 

Listening

If we can begin to understand these things and the things that drive us, then we can start to understand ourselves. With that understanding comes the ability to strengthen our character and change the less desirable traits that drag us down. As we begin to learn about ourselves, we can then start to listen to the messages our minds and bodies are delivering. If we can tune into those messages we can become aware of when we are tipping and make corrections before they become a crisis. If we can understand the how, why and when we are tipping then making corrections becomes a much healthier process. The journey to awareness begins with understanding who we are, so when we begin to tip in one direction or another, we do not lose our balance.
