Life's not fair.

Life's not fair.

Life’s not fair. How often have you heard that one? There is a lot of truth in those words. Of course, it’s a pretty normal response when we find ourselves on the short end of the stick but what happens when you begin to find yourself complaining about being treated unfairly too often? If that’s the case it might be time to dig a little deeper, it might be time to look inward instead of outward. 

When we think about life being unfair it’s really sort of a glass half full, half-empty kind of situation. If you’re reading this article on your phone, your tablet or your speedy new laptop, let’s face it, your glass is a lot more full than most people in this world. We are born into whatever situation we are born into, we have absolutely no control over that. Some of us are extremely fortunate, others not so much. We don’t often give it much thought as we lead our day to day lives. That means as we are going through our day we are probably focused on something that happened to us in the past or projecting what we think will happen in the future. The two are very closely linked, most of the time we’re doing both, thinking about how we may have been treated unfairly in the past and projecting that anticipation toward what is yet to come. We very rarely find ourselves living in the moment. We forget that life is just a series of random events no matter how hard you plan. One day you are eating a slice of pizza the next you win the lottery or worse maybe you find you have a terminal illness. There is no way to know for certain what tomorrow will bring. The only guarantee you have is the moment you are in right now. 

 Is life fair? There is no real answer to that question, it all depends on our perception.  The behaviors we develop in our formative years are the lens we view our lives through today. Often these views exist below the surface at a subconscious level and we don’t even recognize them as they pop up over and over again. We just think about how miserable we are and how what’s going on around us contributed to that feeling of unfairness. You can spend your time fixated on how unfair life may be at any given moment or not but if your goal is peace, contentment or happiness you most likely are focused on the wrong thing.

When it comes to perception you always have a choice. Sometimes just being aware of the messaging is enough to begin to make changes, sometimes fixing what needs fixing takes a little more work. Take a moment to remember the things you have to be grateful for. Take a moment to look at what it might be like for those who are less fortunate than you. Nothing opens your eyes wider than lending assistance to those in need. How are you seeing the world? Is the glass half empty or half full? Maybe it’s not as much about how full the glass is as it is about the fact that we have any glass at all. Practicing awareness is the first step, practicing gratitude, once we have become aware, is the surer path toward peace and contentment.
