To every third grader a fourth grader is a god.

To every third grader a fourth grader is a god.

My buddy Carlos has this saying, "To every third grader a fourth grader is a god." That thought has always stuck with me over the years and anytime I start to doubt myself or my abilities as a teacher I think about those words and realize that my skills are still valuable. No matter what level you’re at in your career or where you think you're headed, this week I’m putting out a simple challenge. Instead of looking to others for guidance, support, help, or whatever else you feel you need, take a moment and consider flipping the script. Find someone who is struggling and offer them a little guidance. Coaches do this kind of work every single day but you might be surprised to find that even if you are just starting out or have what you think of as a thankless position there is someone out there who wishes they could be right where you are, right now. Find that person and lend them a hand.

In our never-ending quest for higher achievement, we sometimes forget that the wisdom, knowledge and skills we’ve already acquired are extremely valuable. To those who are trying to make their way, these things may still feel out of reach. Remember what it took for you to achieve your level, the long hours, the steep hills you had to climb alone, and the connections you forged along the way. What if there would have been someone out there to make those things just a little bit easier. You can be that person. It doesn't always take an expert or a trained professional and you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not. Put your ego aside, the skills you possess are enough, just be 100% authentic, 100% real and 100% committed to helping someone find a better way. The difference you make in that person's life will be the difference you make in your own.
