How to become a Total Rock Star!
How to become a Total Rock Star!

You’ve been slogging through the trenches long enough. You’re tired of being a roadie. Tired of carrying someone else’s load. Tired of setting up and taking down the equipment you’ll never use. It’s time to up your game. Time to take the stage. You know you’ve got it in you, mediocrity is a thing of the past. You are going to be a rock star and nothing is going to get in your way. What? Don’t know how to get there? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered. Here are 5 ways to finally become the rock star you know you are.

    Know your stuff.

Every artist has their tool box. These are the things you use to create your music. Mastering these tools takes time and practice. Too often though we needlessly limit ourselves. Our toolboxes become shallow and our growth stagnates. We stop learning and rely just on what we need to know to get by. When rock stars plateau and stop breaking new ground they know it’s time to learn some new riffs.

A new program will open doors you never knew existed. Short on time? Dive deeper into the programs you already know and you’ll discover techniques you never knew existed. What do you need to learn? What have you always wanted to learn but never got around to? Now is the time. If you really want to be a rock star know that you are never done learning. You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it.

    Study the masters

Incredible music is everywhere. It surrounds us and it inspires us. What is your music? Immerse yourself in it and make collections of things you love. Study them. Understand why you love them and find ways to introduce new techniques into your own work. When you are struggling for new ideas research the masters, they will always show you the way.

    Finding your unique voice

As you study greatness it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. This can quickly become self-destructive. Suddenly you find yourself thinking things like, I’m not good enough, I’ll never be as good, I’ll never be able to do that. Do not fall into this trap. Everybody has a unique voice and their own unique style. If you start to stumble, stop and remember you are who you are. Listen to your own voice and let it guide you.

The work of the masters should be used only for inspiration. Imitation is not the path to becoming a rock star. Rock stars are rock stars because they do not imitate other rock stars. They are rock stars because they’ve developed their own voice and have become known for what they do best. What do you do best?

    Mind games

You are what you tell yourself you are. Every day we feed ourselves messages. Those messages reinforce how we see ourselves. If your mind is telling you-you’re not good enough, it’s time to change the message. Fear and doubt will hold you back if you let them. If you are struggling with the messages in your head, understand you have more control than you may believe.

Recognizing what you tell yourself is the first step. Stop and really listen to the messages you’re delivering. Are they overwhelmingly negative? As you begin to recognize and become aware of your messaging you will begin to realize you also have the ability to change it. This, of course, will not happen overnight. It takes time, dedication and practice. If you are really struggling find someone who can help. There is no shame in asking for help, there is only regret in not making change. The results you achieve will alter the course of your life for the best.

    Show your work

No rock star ever got famous by being a wallflower or playing to an open room. They get famous by getting up on stage and belting out their music for the whole world to hear. Are you playing to an open room? It’s time to share your music. Be fearless. Play to your audience unapologetically and do not compromise your sound to try and appeal to the masses. There is nothing sadder than a watered down performance from an artist trying to be everything to everyone. If you want to be a true rock star you need to shine and the only way to shine is if you’re true to yourself and you’re true to your audience. Now get out there, share your music and tell Bob sent you!
