How Innovative Are You?

How Innovative Are You?

Victor Poirier and his colleagues published research in early 2017 about the characteristics of innovation and how to cultivate them. Among the fourteen characteristics listed that innovative people possess include: curiosity, risk-taking, positive attitude and grit. Why grit? Because innovation isn’t just having an idea, it is transforming an idea into reality — and often doing so is fraught with constraints and “no”s. If you are going to be seen as innovative, you have to have the determination, the vision, the passion to carry your idea through to fruition.

This week’s Challenge: This week, I will appreciate the grit it takes to do the hard work of innovation and will invest more effort in my ideas.

Avoiding being Opportunistic (overuse): If we invest too much of our efforts into making our creative ideas reality at the expense of others, then we have ventured from being innovative to being opportunistic. Holding others in positive regard (where you see others as equals and believe their input has merit) and sticking to ethical principles helps to reign in the overuse of innovative.

Commendable Trait: Innovative

Underused: Unimaginative

Overused: Opportunistic

Strength: Creativity

Quadrant: Resilience
